A count of how many uniformed personnel, civilian Federal employees, and contractors work at the Pentagon – and what they work on – is important for strategic planning and workforce planning. Right now the Department doesn’t know for sure. DoD is trying to standardize how every branch collects data on the contractors they hire to help meet their missions. Tim DiNapoli, director of acquisition and sourcing management issues at the Government Accountability Office, reported recently to the Chairmen and ranking members of the Armed Services Committees on DoD’s progress. Tim told me what he told the members.
